Martin Pinzon Day?

This article appeared in the Press on Columbus Day

NEW YORK – They were co-pilots when Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas in 1492, but unlike Columbus, they are not celebrated with a national holiday in the United States – at least not yet.

Two descendants of the brothers Martin and Vicente Pinzon say it is about time the pilots of the Nina and the Pinta -two of the three ships that were part of Columbus’ expedition – got equal recognition with Columbus. So why not celebrate Pinzon Day?

“I’d like to get the name recognized,” Bob Pinzon, 54, a descendant of the navigators, said Monday. “I think Columbus got too much credit.”

The Pinzons were brothers from a family of Spanish shipowners who sailed with Columbus, who was on the Santa Maria, on his first voyage.

But while Columbus is remembered for informing Spain of his discovery of the New World, Martin Pinzon, the pilot of the Pinta, is known for breaking away from the expedition near Cuba to search for gold and spices.

He tried to beat Columbus back to Spain to gain recognition for finding the New World but arrived too late.

His brother, Vicente, piloted the Nina, and remained with Columbus throughout the expedition.

So what do you think  should Martin Pinzon have his own day

I think Martin Pinzon should have his own day. He was agreat sailor , a better sailor than Columbus and he owned the ship. I don’t think Columbus would have made it with out him

I think that Martin Pinzon shoud have his own holiday. Because he was a good sailor. I don’t know if Columubus would have made it to the New World with out him. Only two boats went back to spain. Martin Pinzon should have his own day.

I think Martin Pinzon should have his own day just like Christopher Columbus cause he is something like Columbus and he is a special person just like the other people cause Columbus would not have made it without Martin Pinzon.

yes they should have a Pinzons day. Because they helped out Columbus. Without there help he would have never been to the New World. Columbus counted on them and they came through for Columbus. He never gave up on Columbus dream.

He should have his own holiday because he is as important as Columbus. He saved Columbus from all the other people in the other ships. He told the people in the other ships that they haqd to keep Columbus alive for at least threee more days. If it wasn’t for Pinzon America wouldn’t have been discovered. He was brave to have tricked the other men to sail with him. He should have his own day.

  15. We are descendant of Martín Alonso Pinzón too. It seems that after his tour of duty with Columbus he was granted voyage by the crown and was the first governor of Puerto Rico after coming back to the new world. After just less than a decade he was granted voyage again. He chose to explore the Amazon and made it into the estuary possibly as far as Colombia where he settled. Most of the Pinzon’s from my family are from Colombia. Some of them moved west to Ecuador. I say let us do as the Spaniards do and celebrate October 12 as Pinzon Day, not Columbus Day as is tradition in Palos de la Frontera. If history would like to redeem itself then I say give is a four day weekend and make a day for the Pinzon’s just before or just following OCT 12.

Martin Pinzon should be honored and have his own day. He, like Columbus is a true discoverer of the Americas and must be recognized. Also, I believe the Pinzon brothers may be my ancestors on my mother’s side of the family. Do you have your genealogy that you can share with me? I would appreciate it very much if you could. Thanks!

  19. My name is Gilbert Pinzon and I agree that there should be a Pinzon Day! The Pinzon Brothers made a significant contribution in discovering the new world. I am one of the proud Pinzon too. Also, I wish for the researcher to continue to study their history. Pinzon history ended with the disappearance of the La Nina. We came from the Northern Philippines. There is a big gap between here and the Philippines. There are only very few bearer of the Pinzon name.

I think without the Pinzon brothers, Columbus wouldn’t have made it to the New World. It’s about time the Pinzons had their share in the glory. The sailors of Palos were scared to go on a voyage with whom they called “a crazy sea captain from Genoa”.The Pinzon brothers were better sailors and better leaders than this evil genocidal pig called Christopher Columbus.
