Amistad Pre- Writing Piece Cinque- John Quincy Adams: The Supreme Court, the Lion and the Rock

In the story the Amistad. Cinqueimages is the leader of the 44 Africans. This is true for many reasons.

1. He leads the rebellion on board the Amistad

2. He is famous in his tribe for killing a lion with a simple rock ( though this he says was just luck or a miracle)

When He meets John Quincy AdamsA0233-John-Quincy-Adams_leader-1 at his house after having been through 2 trials and now getting ready to go the Supreme Court

John Quincy Adams  says the following: Cinque when one is  a leader/ a chief/ a president one tries to do what is best for the villagers, one tries to kill the lion. Indicating that he has heard the story of the killing of the lion with the simple rock.lion-picturebreccia500

He then says” Cinque we are about  to go into the Supreme Court the highest court in the land and face a Lion that is threatening to tear the United States apart ”

With only a rock.

In your opinion what is the Lion that Adams refers to that is going to tear this country apart?  What is the rock that they bring into court. Write at least 8 sentences telling what you think and why you think it.

Some background on John Quincy Adams he was the sixth president the United States. He was the son of the second President a man who started the United States, based on the ideas of freedom and individual rights. He helped right the Declaration of Independence with Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin. A document that declared our independence from the Brittish and  Of which contains these words
” “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men…”
