We are going to play Jeopardy today so here is a quick review….
World War one was fought from 1914 – 1918. Japan was our Ally in this war as was France and England. Germany lost the war and was made to pay back money to the Winners of the war. This ruined the German economy and made Germany very poor. This was the terms of the peace agreement. Germany was also forbidden to raise an army. Adolph Hitler rose to power in part because of the bad shape Germany was left by the terms of the peace. Adolph Hitler was the leader the Nazi parties he had some very extreme and insane ideas, but he sold himself to the German people as restoring Germany to a world power and a great nation. He did by building planes and battleships which created jobs and this restored the economy. But what would follow would be terrible. He was so successful that he was Time magazines man of the year in 1936.
When Germany lost it’s power Japan took it’s place as a world power, building up it’s navy and arming itself. Japan also began to take over island that belonged to Germany. In the 1920’s both Britain and the United States saw Japan as a threat.
Here are some terms we need to further our discussion
Imperialism a policy or practice by which a country increases its power by gaining control over other areas of the world
Isolationism refers to America’s longstanding reluctance to become involved in European alliances and wars. Isolationists held the view that America’s perspective on the world was different from that of European societies and that America could advance the cause of freedom and democracy by means other than war
Disarmament is the act of reducing, limiting, or abolishing weapons.
The event that started WWII was when Germany invaded the country of Poland in 1939. Britain and France then declared war on Germany. The event that got the U.S. involved in WWII was the bombing of the naval base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii by the Japanese on December 7th, 1941. This was a surprise attack because the radar ( a new invention) could not see the hundreds of planes coming through the mountains. Also the attack was early on a sunday morning when most of the naval officers and sailors were off duty.
In the Attack over 2000 men died and we lost 8 battleships.
