What is Copyright?

Definitions of copyright on the Web:

  • a document granting exclusive right to publish and sell literary or musical or artistic  work
  • Copyright is a set of exclusive rights regulating the use of a particular expression of an idea or information.
  • As we approach Movie production season lets spend a few minutes talking about Copyright.  Much of the material you access on the Web is copyrighted, meaning you can not use it in your movie or podcast with out express permission or sometimes paying a fee.

This includes music, movies, pictures and even written words. Just because you can access it on the web does not mean you have the right  to use it.

Many songs, movies and pictures are in the public domain. When we say something is in the public domain we mean they can be used with out fee or permission. One great site for public domain photographs is Pics 4 learning .
